Chapter Twenty-Four

The fear in Cali’s heart turned to sheer horror as she realized Holly, a nanny she had trusted, had stolen her son.

“What am I going to do?” Cali’s pulse galloped as she searched his room for some sign as to where they’d gone.

“Did she leave a ransom note?” Greer tore through Josh’s bedroom.

Nothing.

They’d simply vanished.

“We’ll call the police.” Greer pounced on the telephone and waited for the operator.

“Right.”

Again, Cali was grateful. She needed someone confident and clear-headed like Greer while her own mind spiraled into terror. While Greer waited for the police to find a translator on the telephone, Cali went to Holly’s room.

“Her bag is still here.” Cali placed it on the bed. She took the meager possessions out one by one. There was precious little to leave behind.

“That is odd. If she was stealing Josh…”

“Almost all of Josh’s things are here too.” Cali’s eyes creased. “Why would she take him but leave everything behind?”

“Doesn’t make sense.” Greer shook her head.

The telegram that had been delivered about her brother’s recent turn for the worst was in the bag in a pocket. Then she found another surprise—business cards for Detective Holden and Detective Kane of the Toronto Constabulary. Kane’s handwriting was on the back where he’d scratched out someone else’s name.

“Greer!” Cali turned to Greer, who had finally gotten through to the police in Montreal.

The translator urged them to remain calm and to please come to the police station to make a formal report.

Greer hung up the telephone.

“She had Kane’s card. Before we go, let me try to reach him.” Cali took the phone and asked to be patched through to the Toronto Constabulary. While she waited to speak to Kane, she paced as far as the telephone cord would allow.

“Hello, Toronto Constabulary. Constable Killian,” a very gruff, deep male voice said on the other end.

“I need to speak to either Detective Kane or Detective Holden,” Cali said through tears. “Please, I found their business cards in the luggage of a kidnapper. My son has been stolen. I must speak to Detective Kane at once!”

“Please hold for a moment.”

“I will not hold!” Cali roared into the telephone.

There was no answer.

Cali tried to gulp down her fear as she waited.

Another officer answered the phone. “This is Detective Carlson of the Toronto Constabulary. Who is this, please?”

Cali launched into what she had just told the other officer. “I know Detective Kane. I must speak to him.”

“Detective Kane is not available. He is on assignment, and his location is confidential. Where are you located in the city, madam?”

“I-I-I am in Montreal,” Cali said. “For fashion week. I am a seamstress.”

“Please go to the Montreal Police station immediately. I will give you the address.”

Cali scrambled to write it down and found it matched the address Greer had already jotted down.

“You should go right now, ma’am,” the officer said, sounding very far away.

She hung up the phone, feeling farther from home than ever.

Greer grabbed her handbag, and they raced to find a driver.
